SUFI CRY FOR A RIVER
A Cry for the Jhelum | A Sufi Lament for the Jhelum and Kashmir’s Waters
A contemporary Sufi environmental reflection presented by SufiPulse USA.
Sufi Cry for a River begins with Kashmir’s river as witness.
The Jhelum flows through landscape, settlement, memory, shrine, livelihood, and history.
In this work, the river is given a voice.
Not because water literally speaks.
Because what happens to a river tells us something about the people living beside it.
“When the Jhelum cries, Kashmir must listen.”
The cry is ecological.
The reckoning is human.

◆ WHY THIS WORK
The Jhelum is more than scenery.
It supports communities, ecosystems, cultural memory, and generations of life across Kashmir.
Pollution, unmanaged waste, sewage, encroachment, and neglect are therefore not only environmental problems.
They become questions of responsibility.

◆ EDITORIAL NOTE
The composition uses Kashmir’s Sufi geography poetically, imagining shrines, saints, settlements, and the Jhelum as parts of a remembered spiritual landscape.
It does not claim that saints literally communicated through the river or that every shrine along the Jhelum belonged to one historical silsila.
Water carries memory in the poem.
History requires evidence.

◆ WRITER’S NOTE
References to the Jhelum “crying,” saints “speaking,” or the river “testifying” are poetic personification.
Likewise, the 2014 Kashmir flood may be contemplated spiritually by a believer, but this work does not claim scientific authority to declare it a direct Divine message or punishment.
Floods have hydrological, climatic, infrastructural, and land-use dimensions requiring scientific analysis.
Spiritual reflection asks another question:
What did we learn after the water receded?
The song calls for repentance expressed through action, not fear.

◆ CREATOR & SPIRITUAL CONTEXT
The work joins two ways of seeing the Jhelum:
spiritual memory and environmental responsibility.
From Bijbehara toward Baramulla, the river is treated as a continuous moral landscape: water moving past settlement, memory, shrine, and responsibility.
It acknowledges Dr. M. D. R. Kundangar and Dr. Fayaz Khan within the writer’s interlude as voices associated with concern for Kashmir’s waters and environmental conscience.
Their presence is tribute, not a claim that they speak for the river.
The river needs attention.
